Okay, maybe I am a bit selfish in saying that it was a nice substitute to have my students spend the entire class eagerly writing their in-class essay (The Rhetorical Analysis) instead of looking sullen, tired, grumpy, and lethargic. Yes, I do love being their teacher, but sometimes mama needs a break! And it helped to make Halloween extra special for us all.
They seemed to have very little problem with the assignment, so I guess it is safe to say that freshman do obtain instruction after 5 times of reaffirming it to them! Although, I did have the one student who came into class, sat down, and said, "What are we writing about again?" (Might I mention that we went over this whole essay the entirety of last week - MONDAY, WEDNESDAY, & FRIDAY! - heck, Friday's in-class journal was on a prep, mock version of the big essay today!). Yep, and then I had one student who said to me, "Oh, did we need our books for this?" Yep, he is the student who has yet to BUY his book!
Well, I guess I cannot complain too much because at least 22 outta 26 of the students excelled past my initial hesitation and did awesome. Well, almost awesome.
Needless to say, it was a pretty productive day.
